IMPROVISATIONAL QUILTING 101 - 4 Part SeriesPut the ruler away and join artist Pati Fried to play with color, line and the expressive style of improvisational piecing. This is a course for those who are improvisationally curious. We will break down improvisational piecing into four distinct categories to discuss the why’s and how’s of each technique.
1. Building Blocks 2. Tweaking Tradition 3. Strata and Bits 4. Embrace Your Curves You will finish this course with a toolbox full of techniques to explore more expressive, spontaneous work in the future. This class works well as a once monthly course, as in 1 Saturday per month for 4 months. It can also be taught in a 4-5 day workshop. This is designed for a 1 day per month course. This allows students time to process and explore each technique. It could be shaped for a 3-5 day workshop. |
IGNITING YOUR CREATIVE MOJOCreativity is finicky. It is easy to find yourself at a loss for what to do next. Pati has been an artist her entire life. She has worked through creative ruts, and even a few sinkholes of her own. This workshop moves past the why, and onto the how - how to ignite, or reignite, your creative mojo.
Through reative prompts, and discussions, you will further understand your own voice and style. This will spark ideas for a new project that not only ignites you creatively, but celebrates the unique and artistic voice that you have just discovered! At the end of the course, you will leave with an exciting new project, along with a toolbox full of tips and tricks to spark your ongoing creativity. You will easily adapt these practices into your daily routine to add both confidence and curiosity to your work. May be formatted for a 1, 3, or 5 day workshop. |
A MOMENT IN TIMEWe all have moments and places that we hold dear in our memories. Sometimes they hard to communicate the impact they have in our lives. The emotions they evoke simply cannot be put into words, or captured in a photo. In the early 20th Century, artists were exploring new ways to express their ideas. This developed into the art movement known as "Expressionism," in which artists were more interested in expressing an emotional experience than a realistic image.
Let's honor an important moment in your life with Expressionism. We will explore simple, small studies, playing with texture, unusual fabric choices, and mixed media, along with the use of “no rules or rulers” machine stitching and slowstitching. These explorations will help you to find your own unique voice and style, which will then be applied to your Moment in Time project. By breaking down your final project into a process of layers, you will have many choices and paths to draw from your small explorations, to create a meaningful art quilt that captures the very essence of your moment in time. |
A CORNUCOPIA OF GOOD THINGSTumbling, tipping, toppling and teetering shapes. Movement, rhythm and asymmetry are everywhere. A stack of bowls on the table, an old stone wall, and even a pile of books at the library. Each of these examples have shapes that are repeated over and over. By using the Principles of Design as a guide, we can distribute the visual weight of objects to feel balanced and stable - or not! We will embrace movement and rhythm in a playful way, beginning with shapes in paper form, stacking and pushing the images to the very extreme. Then you will choose your Cornucopia of Good Things and stack them to the sky, or then tumble them to the floor! |

THE 5TH LAYERThe 5th layer isn't just about baubles and beads. It is consciously adding the finishing elements to the 4 layers of a quilt that you worked so hard on. This is your opportunity to bring the quilt to life by enhancing and emphasizing specific areas, add movement and texture, and to create a conversation between the viewer and your work.
We will spend the day exploring unusual ways to add interest to your work with fabric manipulation, embroidery and big stitch thread work, inks and stamps, and yes, a few baubles and beads. Students are encouraged to bring an unfinished work to discuss in individual conferences on how to add a successful 5th layer. |
