Boro, Kantha, Sashiko, Big Stitch, Hand Quilting and Embroidery - We all have our favorite go-to stitches when we pick up a needle and thread. Let's spend some time looking at the history of these various stitches and more, learning about cultural techniques and how the are being embraced today.  Whether you are drawn to the big, bold, colorful stitches of today, or perfectly placed hand quilting of yesterday, there is a stitch for everyone. We will discuss techniques and materials, but also tackle the topic of how to find your own personal style and stitch, when there are so many choices.

Using the principles and elements of design can act as a road map for venturing into new design territory. But, listening to your inner voice is where the creative magic happens. It is important to understand both. This is an opportunity to sit back, let your mind wander and get in touch with your own creative spirit. Imagine all the ways to draw inspiration from what you see and what you love, then use design principles to guide you to where the magic happens.

​TAMING THE SOCIAL MEDIA DRAGON

We have all done it - thought we would spend 5 minutes on social media, just to find we are still scrolling an hour later. Just to walk away and find ourselves questioning our own self worth. This is not OK! There are ways to put yourself control of your dragon and use social media to your creative advantage. Learn how to use Pinterest, Instagram, Youtube, and even Facebook as a reliable resource for what YOU need. After taming my dragon, I have now found ways to flag what inspires me, and know how to get back to it quickly for a creative boost when I need it.  

Let's talk about healthy ways to use social media as a productive tool to boost creativity, access tutorials quickly, and find the information we are looking for without wasting an entire afternoon looking.

We live in an innovative society. Change and transformation is everywhere. Quilting is ever changing, just as art has evolved through the ages. Modern, improvisational and minimalist design all draw inspiration from history. Let's shake things up a bit and discuss how to use traditional quilts and block design as a jumping off point for innovative design in your next quilt. Explore the principles of modern quilt design and how a traditional quilter might use these to challenge their design skills. By looking at fundamental design elements individually, it is easy to understand how to create original designs with a modern aesthetic.

FINDING MY VOICE


I discovered quilting 25 years ago. My roots are in traditional quilting, but the clean aesthetics of Modern Design appeals to my background in Graphic Design. This has led me on a quest to merge what I love most of these to styles to express my own voice in my work.
Follow along as I share my ups and downs, successes and failures, and tips on how to find your own voice.
